Exclusive: The Atlantic Records-artist also discusses the botched roll out of his single, “All Star,” as well as his collaboration with Jennifer Lopez.
Ty Dolla $ign discussed the status of a Taylor Gang project. In an exclusive conversation with HipHopDX, the Los Angeles, Californian says that the Wiz Khalifa-led collective is still waiting for the right time to release a project. He also says that he expects a full Taylor Gang project by the end of 2014.
“It’s definitely a crew of talented dudes and girls, just dope people from different states—Pittsburgh, you’ve got people from the Bay, LA,” Ty Dolla $ign says. “[Tuki Carter’s] out in Atlanta, he’s from LA. We got some dope music coming. There’s already a [project] that they’ve been talking about for a while. Now I’m in The Gang, so I got my input on there. We’re just waiting for the right time, really. I think it should be coming out this year for sure, though.”
Ty Dolla $ign Discusses Jennifer Lopez Collaboration
The Beach House-artist also reflected on the botched release of one of his early hits, “All Star,” which features Joe Moses. Ty says that the song was released to iTunes before the sample was cleared, which forced it out of radio rotation. He also discusses his upcoming collaboration with Jennifer Lopez.
“It would be super easy if we could just do a song and put it on the Internet,” he says. “But now it’s serious. Now you have to go through a process and make sure everything is right by law. If you put something out the wrong way, it could be another “All Star” situation. That was my song before I signed to [Atlantic Records]. It was huge on Power 106 out here and should’ve went [farther], but it had a Sweedish House Mafia sample in it. They were gonna clear it. Everything was talked about, but then the guy who I was working with put it on fucking iTunes before it was time. They made us take it down and cease all fucking plays on radio. It fucked up the radio. So I’m never gonna do that again.
“I like to personally focus on me,” he continues. “I wish I didn’t have to think on none of that other shit. It’s starting to be a thing when you make a song. I did a song with [Jennifer Lopez] and they’re playing me the rest of her album telling me how this can go with this, and I’m like, ‘Damn, dog.’ It’s serious. It’s a bigger world. All that shit is gonna drive sales to the song. Me, I just want to say what the fuck I want to say. I don’t want to have to think about, ‘Is this gonna work with Target?’ I want to make what the fuck I want to make and hopefully people like it.”
According to it’s website, Taylor Gang includes Wiz Khalifa, Chevy Woods, Juicy J, Berner, Project Pat, Quay Meanz, Courtney Noelle, Tuki Carter, Ty Dolla $ign, and J.R. Donato.
